My thoughts about Joe Amato's Family Values

Reading through Joe Amato’s Family Values, I like the way he expresses about the people in his family. He does openly and says how they really are but in a respectful way. I like how he has some short sentences in the middle of regular sentences. Following his parents’ divorce, Joe and his father moved out to another house. They struggled living in this house and had to look for a new one. But even through all these he was the first person in his family to hold a four year college degree for engineering. He is now an assistant professor of English at a technical institute in Chicago.

  1. Milly, I have to agree with your comments regarding how he respectfully express about his family and specially I like how open he is with their problems, like his uncle being in jail for 21 years or the rumor of his aunt having an affair with a African American while his family member was in the war. You Comment about his parents’ divorce and also you said the he when to live with his father why do you believe he choice to live with his father?
I do give a lot of respect to Joe Amato because it must be really hard to able to keep going to school specially having a lot family issues like he did, and that’s why is so important to be able to see his desire of become a engineer at the first time. I think he became an engineer because he wants it to have a degree because we can see the he change his major and became an English Professor.
I do have some of questions why do you believe he spent four years in college to became a engineer and then change his major? What was his motive to do so? Do you think it was for the money? Or the he was not a good engineer and he could not find a job as one?

  2. I think he chose to live with his father because maybe he thought that his father would encourage him to do better. His father was a hard working man and had many jobs. Maybe he didn't like the way his mom lived her life. I think that at first he did like his major but later on as he went through school and his experiences, he decided that is wasn't for him. Maybe he wanted to become an English Professor so that he could express himself and influence other people. I don't think that it was because of the money or because he couldn't find a job. He probably just took long to realize what his real passion was.

  3. Personally I didn't like how he so openly stated his family's hardships for all the world to see. Somethings are better not said.
In achieving a English major he proved that his family circumstances wouldn't hold him down. With a four year college degree maybe he thought he could influence the people around him to do better. It is also possible he was proving himself to his wife's(Kass) parents.
In response to what Milly said about his choice of living with his father, maybe he thought he could help him.
