Literacy

As I read Joe Amato’s reading I couldn’t help but to think about all the struggles he went through in the course of his life. Being raised in a hard working family which in; everyone had their own problem. To having an engineering college degree.
I think this reading relates a lot to what we have been talking in class these past months, not only race, but social classes too, Also about literary backgrounds. I noticed as I was reading he talked about different languages his family speaks.

  1. Maybe next time I should read more than the first half of the narrative. From what I got from this reading and all the readings is that people are rarely thrilled with the current situation they are in. Be it language or social class or tax bracket, whatever the case may be, we all struggle to improve ourselves and our status in life. I’m going through all this as we speak. I can relate to some of the things Joe Amato spoke of. I’m reflecting on my life and the decisions I have made. How did I get to this point in my life? And since everyday brings us all to a new point, how do we handle these situations?

  2. Lenny, yeah I think we all get to some point or maybe various points where we reflect or consider the choices we make and ultimately we need to move forward or through these issues and think about how all those things influence our literacy practices and future educational experiences.

  3. everyone has to make big decitions in some point of our life ..good ones or bad ones they still shape our life in some form.. and for what you said about "we all struggle to improve ourselves and our status in life" i strongly agree with it, because us writing this is a good example... the reason why we here in college its to try to improve ourselves and our status in life... !!! we just got to be carefull with the choices we make so we dont regret it later on in life.

  5. I agree that his narrative showed his families cultural diffusion with Americas. It showed his families struggle and perservierance threw tough times. I also noticed the different languages he used from Italian, to standard english, and broken english. I also find it impressive that he was able to get his degree even though he grew up in poor nieghborhood.

  6. I agree with you in how it is great that he was able to get an engineering college degree and even later on he became an English Professor. Sometimes growing up in harsh conditions like that make you a stronger person and influence you to do better.
I also agree that this does relate to what we have been talking about in class about different languages, etc. Joe Amato was able to understand his family's dialect and was still able to manage to speak in proper English.

  7. I find this posting interesting because we're assuming that when you grow up in a working class or "poor" area you might not have access to higher education or standard american english. Is that necessarily true? And does everyone who grows up in harsh conditions become stronger? Should we have to go through that upbringing to become strong?
